The ADB-Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) annually awards approximately 135 scholarships each year for postgraduate studies in various fields such as economics, business and management, science and technology, and other areas related to development.
Scholarship Benefits
The ADB-JSP covers:
– Full tuition fees
– Monthly subsistence allowance (including housing)
– Books and instructional materials
– Medical insurance
– Travel expenses
For those engaged in research, a special grant for thesis preparation may be provided. In exceptional cases, courses in computer literacy, preparatory language, and other similar subjects may also be covered.
Major Fields of Study
– Science and Technology: Agriculture, Biological Science, Computer Science, Energy, Engineering, Environment, Forestry, Genetics, and Health.
– Economics, Business and Management: Accounting, Business Administration/Management, Commerce, E-Business, Entrepreneurship, Economics, Finance, International Cooperation, and Social Sciences.
– Development Studies: Asia Pacific Studies, Development Management, and Development Studies.
– Law and Public Policy: International Business Law, International Environmental Law, Policy Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, and Public Policy.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must:
– Be nationals of an ADB borrowing member country and a Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible country.
– Not hold dual citizenship with any developed country.
– Have been accepted into an approved master’s course at a Designated Institution.
– Possess a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with a strong academic record.
– Have at least two years of full-time professional working experience after obtaining a university degree.
– Be proficient in English, both oral and written.
– Be no older than 35 years at the time of application (exceptions may be made in special cases with endorsement from the Government of Japan).
– Be in good health.
– Commit to returning to their home country and contributing to its development for at least two years after completing the program.
– Not be an Executive Director, Alternate Director, management, staff, or consultant of ADB, nor a close relative of the aforementioned individuals.
– Not be staff of ADB-JSP Designated Institutions.
– Not reside or work in a country other than their home country.
– Not be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program.

– Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Niue, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Viet Nam.
Application Procedure
1. Request Information: Contact your chosen partner institution for information and application forms.
2. Complete Documents: Prepare all necessary documents, including the ADB-JSP information sheet.
3. Submit Documents: Send the completed documents to the institution.
4. Evaluation: The institution evaluates applications and makes admission decisions.
5. Shortlist: The institution sends a shortlist of candidates to ADB.
6. Review: ADB reviews the submissions.
7. Recommendation: ADB recommends awardees to the Japanese executive director for approval.
8. Selection: ADB finalizes the selection and informs the institution.
9. Notification: The institution notifies all selected scholars.
Note: Applicants must submit the latest income tax return or certification of their annual/monthly salary and a certification of family income (parent’s income). Applications should be sent to the institution at least six months before the intake commencement. Only candidates endorsed by academic institutions will be considered for the scholarship by ADB.
Please note that the ADB-JSP does not cover expenses for scholars’ families, extracurricular courses, additional travel, supplementary educational materials, field trips, workshops, seminars, internships, or the purchase of educational equipment such as computers. Admission by the academic institution does not guarantee a scholarship award. Applicants should wait for confirmation before making any changes to their current employment or other commitments.
