Overview

The World Bank Group Young Professionals Program (WBG YPP) is an elite pathway for aspiring leaders in international development. This prestigious program recruits globally, seeking individuals with diverse academic and professional backgrounds pertinent to the World Bank, IFC, and MIGA. The program is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of leaders capable of addressing complex global development challenges.

Eligibility Criteria

General Requirements

  • Birth Date: On or after October 1, 1991
  • Education:
    • World Bank & MIGA: Master’s degree by September 2023 or PhD by September 2024 in a relevant field.
    • IFC: Relevant graduate degree by September 2024 (e.g., MBA, Economics, Finance, International Relations).
  • Professional Experience:
    • World Bank & MIGA: 3+ years or equivalent doctoral study.
    • IFC: 4+ years in finance, project development, economic development, and/or consulting. CFA certification is a plus.
  • Languages: Fluent in English; proficiency in Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish is a plus.
  • Commitment: Demonstrated passion for international development and strong academic credentials.

 

Program Features

  • Professional Experience

YPs are full-time employees contributing significantly to their units and participating in field missions to gain hands-on experience.

  • Leadership Development

Through workshops, mentorship, and direct engagement with WBG leadership, YPs develop essential leadership and professional skills.

  • Training

Intensive training on WBG policies, products, and operations prepares YPs to implement joint solutions for development challenges.

  • Global Rotations

YPs experience rotations within and across institutions to broaden their understanding and apply their skills in diverse contexts, including challenging environments.

  • Mentorship & Networking

YPs receive guidance from multiple mentors and participate in networking events, staying connected with alumni and broader WBG staff.

  • Short Summary of Thesis or Dissertation (World Bank candidates, if applicable)
  • 3 Professional or Academic Recommendations (requested during eligibility screening)

Short Essay Prompts (500 words each)

  1. Explain why you want to join the WBG YPP and what makes you a strong candidate. Indicate your preference for the World Bank, IFC, or MIGA, and why.
  2. Describe how you would advise the World Bank Group to support countries facing overlapping crises, focusing on increasing government capacity, mobilizing private sector financing, and engaging the international community. Include examples based on your expertise.

Interview Process

  • Hybrid format (virtual and in-person)
  • Components may include:
    • Pre-recorded interview (Hirevue)
    • Live panel interview
    • Assessment center (individual and group exercises)
    • Timed computer-based financial tests (IFC candidates)

Candidates are evaluated based on their experience, technical expertise, and competencies such as client orientation, leadership, and communication.
