The Bank Internship Program (BIP) provides highly motivated individuals with the opportunity to gain exposure to the World Bank’s mission and work. Interns bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and research experience, enhancing their skills in a diverse environment while gaining practical work experience.
Internship Areas
Internships are available in:
- Development Operations: Economics, finance, public health, education, nutrition, social sciences, agriculture, environment, engineering, urban planning, natural resources management, private sector development, and related fields.
- Corporate Support: Human Resources, Communications, Accounting, Information Technology, Treasury, and other corporate services.
Eligibility Criteria
- Education: Candidates must have an undergraduate degree and be enrolled in a full-time graduate program (master’s or PhD) with plans to return to school full-time.
- Languages: Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese, or Chinese is desirable.

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: Interns receive an hourly wage.
- Travel Allowance: Up to USD 3,000 for travel expenses (airfare only), at the manager’s discretion.
- Location: Most positions are based in Washington, DC, with some in country offices.
- Visa: J1 visa holders must obtain a G4 visa abroad before starting the internship.

Selection Process
After the application period, qualified profiles are shared with World Bank units. Following interviews, selections are made, and the new BIP cohort begins in early May.
